Weekly Update: June 25, 2010
Technical News
We are launching two enhanced notices on Monday, June 28. These will be live for everyone. You don’t need to take any action.
- Beginning Monday morning, notices for damaged items will automatically include the cost of the item. These will be automatically generated the day after the item is marked damaged.
- Additionally, when a patron owes $25 or more to the library for at least 45 days, but has no outstanding items, a 45 day notification will now be generated in the library’s 45 day notices link.
Catalog News
We’re currently testing a catalog modification created by Jason Boyer of the Jackson County Public Library on the migration server. This modification enhances features catalogers and reference staff have been asking for.
The following fields will be added to Title Details Displays:
500, 504, 505, 400, 410, 411, 440, 490, 651, 800, 810, 811, 830.
650 fields were already being displayed, and if any of the 8XX fields are present, all of the obsolete 4XX fields are ignored.
Be sure to see the examples below:
- A record with a large 505 note, when 500 or 505 fields are over 500 characters the data is hidden behind a Show Contents button: Sample no longer available
- A series example, this record has both 800 field series information and 490, so the 490 is ignored: Sample no longer available
- Also, patrons will be able to place their own holds on specific volumes of periodicals or multi-volume sets, meaning fewer calls to library circulation desks for holds. If a call number looks like “1 of 2”, “v.3”, “no.4”, or a 3 letter month abbreviation, then a Place Hold link will be displayed next to each volume in the list. Please send feedback if a library has a significant number of periodical call numbers that don’t look like one of those examples. Sample no longer available
Please send any feedback to Jason by next Friday, July 2. We need to hear feedback before we can make this live.
A note for the brave: if you are NOT using Internet Explorer, try new searches after following those links to sample a proposed call number display for the staff client. Up to 4 locations’ call numbers will be displayed. As the search is filtered to more specific locations, fewer call numbers are shown. Being on the migration server, this is NOT fast. Speed would be much improved if actually implemented on evergreen.lib.in.us. If implemented, this change would likely be visible only to staff until an upgrade to 2.0.
