March 21, 2023

As I was preparing to write this update, I was reminded of the quote by Michael Caine. “Be like a duck.  Calm on the surface, but always paddling like the dickens underneath.”  It sounds about right, right?  And maybe it feels like that a lot of time.

But Amelia Neirenberg recasts this idea by reminding us of “… a fundamental ornithological point. Ducks do not need to kick to stay afloat.  Instead, they float naturally, their hollow bones, little air sacs, the oil they secrete rendering the duck buoyant.  The duck does not need to paddle to float.  It just needs to be, and its body will do the rest.”  She goes on to say “Whatever natural buoyancy you have, remember that, and separate your self-worth from self-promotion.”

For me, this seems to directly relate to libraries who do such amazing jobs to provide access and information for everyone in our communities.  Pull me aside at a conference or meeting, and I will tell you how the public library helped me find my natural buoyancy at times when sinking was the logical thing to do.  With that said, I’ve linked Amelia’s article below the updates.

You are doing a great job.
