Weekly Update – June 19, 2012
Clarification on Weekly Update – June 12, 2012
In last week’s Evergreen Update, it included a section on “Deleting holds”. There were a few items in that piece that we would like to correct. The system has always automatically deleted expired holds older than 9 months.
What was corrected by the ISL’s system administrators was that approximately 400 holds were deleted due to the fact that their target record (bib, call number, or volume) had been deleted from the system. This also contributed to wasted processing time for legitimate holds, since it was looking for holds which were impossible to fulfill.
Kid’s OPAC
Below is a link to a new Kids OPAC skin that the ISL currently has in test. Others will be sent out for review in the coming weeks. This is very early in the development stage, so images are placeholders and colors aren’t finalized. Also, there aren’t very many items in this test system, but terms like “cars”, “baseball”, etc. will be your best bets for getting results.
[The testing term has ended.]

Usernames and passwords
Each institution has the following usernames by default: localadmin, circ1 and a cat2. Usernames are assigned privileges essential for that user group’s work. For example, a circ1 has privileges for performing higher-level circulation functions but it cannot perform higher level cataloging functions. This serves as a protection mechanism for the system and for the staff member so that the individuals how have had appropriate training can perform tasks but those who haven’t had training cannot.
Remember, you are accountable for what happens when a workstation is logged in with a username for which you are responsible.
Cataloging policy changes
As was previously discussed in the March 27, 2012 Weekly Update blog post, beginning June 30, 2012 the permissions for Cat-2 catalogers will change. Cat-2 catalogers will no longer be able to create new MARC records, batchload new records or edit MARC records. Only Cat-1 catalogers will be able to create new MARC records, add records by batchloading and edit MARC records.
If there are Cat-2 catalogers performing these functions, those staff members will need training to obtain their Cat-1 certification. If you need Cat-1 training before the new Cataloging Policy goes in effect June 30, please check back to the schedule on the right-hand side of the blog soon as the cataloging committee will be planning a class for the end of summer and for the fall.
Modified catalog freeze
A modified catalog freeze will be in place from Thursday, June 21, 2012 AM to Tuesday, June 26, 2012 AM or until the announcement on the listservs that the freeze has ended.
During a modified catalog freeze. . .
DO NOT import, edit, delete or create new bibliographic records.
DO attach holdings and edit holdings.
