Entry #
There can only be one 100 field per record if applicable. It is not repeatable. Unlike the Statement of Responsibility in the 245 field $c, the 100 field uses an established (authorized) heading. This allows works by the same author to be linked by that name structure.
Name of Author on the Work | Authorized Name of the Author in the 100 Field |
Jennifer Lynn Barnes V. E. Schwab Prince Harry V.C. Andrews J.D. Robb | =100 1\ $a Barnes, Jennifer Lynn. =100 1\ $a Schwab, Victoria. =100 0\ $a Harry, $c Prince, Duke of Sussex, $d 1984- =100 1\ $a Andrews, V. C. $q (Virginia C.) =100 1\ $a Robb, J. D. |
The name of the author with primary responsibility or the first-named author is entered in the 100 field.

This book has a single author. That means this author’s name should be entered in the record’s100 field. A first indicator of 1 is used because we are entering the author’s surname first. =100 1\$aRiordan, Rick. We retrieved this author’s established name fromthe Library of Congress Authorities. We can also add a $e to describe the relationship betweenthe named person and the work. =100 1\$aRiordan, Rick,$eauthor. |
It is important to check the established heading as sometimes there is more to the heading than what is listed on the item. Check other records by the same author in the Evergreen Indiana catalog, check the Evergreen Indiana authority file, or search the Library of Congress Authorities. If the author/creator does not have an established heading, transcribe the name in the 100 field as it is found on the item in hand. Check other records by the same author to make sure the 100 fields match.

Even though the author is listed as “Stephen King” on the item, “King, Stephen” is not the authorized heading for the Stephen King we all know about. = 100 1\ $a King, Stephen = 100 1\ $a King, Stephen, $d 1947- This authorized heading is more specific becausethere are multiple authorized headings for the name,”King, Stephen”. For more information on authorities and why we use them, check out the May 2023 Cataloging Roundtable recording! |
If there are multiple authors listed for a single work, enter the first-named author in the 100 field. Other subsequent authors may be listed in the 245 $c and a 7xx field.

Since James Patterson is listed first, his name will be entered into the 100 field for the record. =100 1\$aPatterson, James, $d1947- A $e may be added to describe the relationship between the author and the work. The remaining prominent authors should be entered as is in the Statement of Responsibility (245 field $c) and in a 700 (personal name) field with their established heading if one is available. =100 1\$aPatterson, James, $d1947- $eauthor. =245 14$aThe 23rd midnight / $cJames Patterson & Maxine Paetro. =700 1\$aPaetro, Maxine,$eauthor. For more information on the Statement of Responsibility and the 700, please see the Title Statement and Added Entry chapters. |
According to RDA, if multiple works by multiple authors are under a collective title, record the title in the 245 and omit the 1xx. Each author should still be entered in the 245 $c and have a corresponding 700 field.

Do not include a 1xx field. Enter a 245 with the listed contributors in a $c, and add a 700 field for each creator. Check for an authority record for each name for the 700 field. If each work within the compilation has a known title and specific author, you may include a preferred title in a $t. =245 00$aSilent night /$c J.D. Robb, Susan Plunkett, Dee Holmes, Claire Cross. =700 1\$aCross, Claire.$t Berry merry Christmas. =700 1\$aHolmes, Dee.$t Unexpected gift. =700 1\$a Plunkett, Susan.$t Christmas promises. =700 1\$a Robb, J. D., $d 1950- $tMidnight in death. |
Punctuation #
- Adjacent personal name initials/letters or an abbreviation for a name and an adjacent name or initial/letter are separated by one space.
- Robb, J. D., NOT Robb, J.D.
- Field 100 ends with a mark of punctuation or a closing parenthesis. If the final subfields are $0, $2, $3, $4, or $5, the mark of punctuation or closing parenthesis precedes those subfields.
