New Evergreen Indiana libraries

Four new libraries will be migrating to Evergreen Indiana next week on Tuesday, August 23!

Tell City-Perry County Public Library Board of Trustees and Cannelton Public Library Board of Trustees signed an agreement in June 2011 to merge the two libraries beginning January 1, 2012 under the library name Perry County Public Libraries. Tell City will be the main branch and Cannelton will be the Cannelton branch.

Don’t forget about the modified cataloging freeze beginning Friday at 8am, August 19 and lasting until Tuesday at 8am, August 23.

Acquisitions pilot

As many of you already know, we are in the process of preparing documentation and training for Evergreen Indiana member libraries on using the Acquisitions module of Evergreen 2.0. In order to better serve our consortium, we collected results from a survey sent out last week which will help us gather information on former experience with acquisitions systems in libraries and what vendors libraries are currently using. We will contact the vendors that our libraries report using and work with them to set up EDI before opening it up to our member libraries. In doing this, we can provide documentation and support when EI libraries want to set up those vendors for themselves.

Decisions made at the August 8 Executive Committee meeting

Z39.50 database

In the spirit of open-source software, Evergreen Indiana has set up a Z39.50 database to share our bibliographic records with other Evergreen libraries/consortia. The Executive Committee approved allowing other Evergreen consortia access to our database on a case-by-case basis and the Cataloging Committee will be adding this information to the EI Cataloging Policy and Procedures documents. Evergreen Indiana has such a strong training and documentation program for educating our member libraries on cataloging standards and practices so we feel confident that Evergreen International libraries will find great quality in our database. With more than 2.4 million bibliographic records to share, other Evergreen libraries and consortia are sure to see a diversity of titles, authors, subjects and media to help them in their own cataloging endeavors.

For access to the Z39.50 database, Evergreen libraries/consortia can contact the Evergreen Indiana helpdesk at helpdesk@evergreen.lib.in.us.

New Item Status

The Executive Committee passed a new item status for consortium use: Contact Library. This status is useful to indicate to a patron that the item may be available but the patron must contact the library to access it.

Check-out functionality development

Development of the check-out “sticky due date” functionality mentioned in the Weekly Update – August 2 has been cancelled. It would not have been possible to use the development as it was originally quoted on our current version of Evergreen (2.0.4). The functionality was to be written to be compatible with Evergreen 2.2 which won’t be available for another year at least. We apologize for any inconvenience but we think everyone will agree that paying for development of something we won’t be able to use for a year or more wouldn’t be agreeable for anyone.
