New modifiers vs age-hold protection

We were asked by member library staff to clarify the difference between age-hold protection and the “new” circulation modifiers.

Age-hold protection

The age-hold protection attribute uses an item’s “active date” to determine when it’s eligible to transit outside of its owning library’s branch or system to another member library for a hold request. Libraries can choose between a 3-month (branch or system) or a 6-month (branch or system) waiting period.

Notes

  • The active date is set when an item is checked in from being “In Process” after being cataloged.
  • Adding age-hold protection will not work if the current date is 3- or 6-months after the active date.
  • You can easily switch to a different age-hold protection by updating your templates. You can batch update new material using Item Status, or by submitting a help desk ticket.

“New” circulation modifiers

The “new” circulation modifiers work similar to the age-hold protection, except the waiting period is 12 months and cannot be changed.  Once that 12 months has been reached, the item will automatically be switched to the generic circulation modifier of the same name.

Notes

  • You do not need to use both the “new” modifier and age-hold protection. In any case, the age-hold protection would fall off months before the “new” modifier switches out.
  • The “new” modifiers usually have different circulation duration options and zero or one renewal.

Your local circulation policy or procedure will determine which (if any) option is used. At this time, if your library wishes to use an alternative age-hold protection option, we recommend using the “new” circulation modifier and then manually switching it to its comparable circulation modifier. Please note the different durations in the circulation matrix.

Upcoming Webinars

Local Administration for Evergreen Indiana has been scheduled for the last Wednesday of each month in 2026 (except for November and December!). This is not an alternative to the annual refresher that all LocalAdmin holders must take. Register here!

We’ve finally scheduled training for the new reporter! New Reporter Basics (Feb 18 @ 2pm EST) will be for those who have never used the report module before. We’ll be creating folders and learning how to clone existing templates for use. For those who’d like to dive into the templates themselves, join us for New Reporter Advanced (March 31 @ 2pm EST).

On March 3 @ 3pm EST, we’ll be looking at how to use the inventory function in Evergreen: best practices, report templates, etc.

Watch the Evergreen Indiana calendar for future webinars and events happening throughout the consortium! We list cataloging parties, scheduled Aspen reindexes, and other things we’d like share.
